Mockitt AI · Start with the work, not a blank grid
AI Excel Generator
Describe the job. Build a spreadsheet that fits it.
Create an editable Excel workbook with the Mockitt AI desktop app. Explain what you need to record, how the numbers should add up, and who will update the file. Then refine the columns, formatting, and summaries as the work takes shape.
File tasks use the desktop app for Windows or macOS.

Choose the task you need to complete
Project schedules
Keep each task, owner, start date, due date, and status on one row. Define how to flag late work rather than asking for a generic project dashboard.
Expense trackers
Record amounts, categories, dates, and receipt status. Specify the currency and tax treatment so the summary uses a consistent basis.
Customer follow-ups
Give each record a stage, next action, owner, and follow-up date. Leave unknown dates and amounts blank instead of creating information to fill the table.
Inventory logs
Choose whether one row describes an item or an inventory movement. Include item identifiers and locations without mixing those two levels of detail.
Build a structure your team can keep using
Start by defining one row. In a task tracker, it represents one task, not every task assigned to a person. Put the owner, dates, status, and notes in separate columns. That structure makes it easier to filter work, add a risk field, or summarize progress without rebuilding the workbook.
Describe the sheets you want. A Details sheet holds individual records, a Summary sheet answers a specific question, and an Instructions sheet explains field meanings and status options. Treat identifiers as text when leading zeros matter. Keep a missing amount distinct from a known value of zero.
Give the workbook a calculation it can be checked against
For an illustrative USD expense tracker, use three records: cloud services at $280, participant incentives at $120, and design assets at $68. Their total is $468. If the participant incentives change to $150, the total should become $498. This small edit is a useful check that the summary refers to the details rather than a typed total.
Store the amounts as numbers and apply a currency display format. A cell that contains the text ‘$280.00’ may behave differently from the number 280 formatted as USD. Ask for a summary by team, and check both each team's amount and the overall total.
| Expense | Team | Amount | Receipt status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud services | Engineering | $280.00 | Pending |
| Participant incentives | Research | $120.00 | Complete |
| Design assets | Design | $68.00 | To review |
| Total | All teams | $468.00 | Calculated from details |
On a small screen, swipe across the table to see every column.
Ask for the behavior as well as the appearance
‘Make an attractive expense sheet’ describes a look, but not how the workbook should work. Say whether totals should update when an amount changes, whether new rows should join the summary, and how missing dates or categories should be listed. Ask for clear headers and a frozen first row if the sheet will be long.
For a simple check, if the three expense amounts occupy C2:C4, =SUM(C2:C4) should return 468. A workbook intended to grow also needs a range or table structure that includes later records. Add a fourth expense and confirm that the summary includes it; a correct initial total does not prove the file will handle future entries.
Change the workbook without losing the original records
Keep the next request specific: ‘Preserve every expense record. Add an Approver column after Receipt status and leave historical entries blank.’ To add a new reporting view, ask for a monthly summary that uses the same details sheet instead of a second manually maintained copy.
Separate formatting changes from changes to the underlying data. You can request dates displayed as month/day/year while retaining valid date values, or amounts shown with two decimal places without rounding the stored numbers. Name the worksheet and column whenever an instruction could affect more than one place.
Open the generated file in the spreadsheet application your team uses. Try one new row, edit one amount, and inspect any formulas or charts you requested. Complex formulas, external connections, macros, and layout can behave differently across spreadsheet applications and versions.
From your materials to a useful result
Explain the working routine
Say who fills in the workbook, how often it changes, and what decision or handoff it supports. Define one row and the required fields.
Specify the output
Request .xlsx and name the sheets, units, and calculation rules. With no real data yet, choose an empty template or clearly marked sample records.
Refine a specific part
Name the sheet and columns to change. Describe what must stay intact and request a separate output version when editing an existing file.
Try the workbook
Open it, change a value, and add a row. Check totals, dates, filters, and formula coverage before asking teammates to use it.
Illustrative workbook brief
An expense workbook with details and a summary
Continue with a focused revisionChange participant incentives to 150 USD and confirm the total is 498 USD. Then add an Approver column, preserve the existing records, and explain how a newly added expense is included in the summary.
These are sample expense records. Replace them with actual amounts before using the workbook for your team.

AI Excel Generator questions
Do I need the desktop app?
This page's Excel file tasks use the Mockitt AI desktop app for Windows or macOS. The browser-based prototype workflow is a different entry point and should not be treated as an Excel editor.
Can I generate a workbook without existing data?
Yes. Describe the fields and rules, then request an empty template or a version with labeled sample records. Remove or replace those examples before using the file for actual work.
Can I request formulas and charts?
Describe the calculations and presentation you need. Check the resulting workbook in your spreadsheet application and change an input to test the result. A preview image cannot establish that a formula works.
Can I update an existing Excel file?
Provide the file and identify the sheet, columns, and changes. Confirm that the correct headers and records were read, preserve the original, and ask for the updated workbook as a new version.
How does this differ from AI data analysis?
Workbook generation establishes how to record and organize work. Data analysis starts with existing records and asks what changed, where differences occur, and what further information a decision needs.
